Hey, {{first_name | Founder}}!
"We have no competitors."
Every angel investor has heard it. Founders say it like a badge of honor, thinking it proves they are building something entirely new.
It's actually a massive red flag.
When you say you have no competition, it tells the room you haven't mapped your market. It signals that you don't understand the field well enough to run a real business.

Competitor analysis isn't a checklist to see who you need to copy. It's how you read the playing field.
The mistake is looking for companies that look exactly like yours. Stop asking "who does what we do?" Ask "what is the customer using instead?"
Substitutes, more often than not, are more important than direct competitors.
If a problem is painful enough to build a company around, people are already paying to solve it. Maybe it's a messy spreadsheet. Maybe it's an intern. Maybe it's ignoring the problem entirely and eating the cost.
Find the substitute. That is what's currently winning the wallet.
